Should I jailbreak/unlock my iPad 2? Answers to Some Common Questions

Jailbreaking and unlocking are two words that come up very often when discussing the iPad or other Apple products. And the people who hear those words can be divided into two groups pretty easily: those who have know idea what they mean, and those that realize the huge benefits associated with jailbreaking. This post will be aimed at helping the first group join the second.

What is jailbreaking? When you buy a product running iOS, you’re stuck with a lot of restrictions built in by Apple. For example, you can’t run any apps that aren’t offered through the official iTunes store. Jailbreaking an iPad 2 or other device removes these restrictions. You will still be able to use iTunes, the App Store, and all of the other standard features normally, but now with the added ability to download (free) third-party apps to your jailbroken device.

What is  unlocking? Also built into the software of the iPad and iPhone is code that “locks” your device to a specific carrier. When AT&T was the only carrier of the iPhone, all iPhones were “locked” from being used on other carriers. You could only use it on AT&T, and changing the SIM card would not work. Although the iPhone is now available from Verizon as well, the locking feature is still standard. Unlocking your iPad or iPhone allows you to use it with a carrier other than Verizon or AT&T. You can also change the SIM card.

Do I have to jailbreak my iPad/iPhone to unlock it? Yes. Otherwise, the pre-jailbreak  restrictions will prevent you from unlocking your device.

Is jailbreaking illegal? Jailbreaking your iPad, iPhone, or other device, is not illegal in the United States. If you live elsewhere, please check your country’s laws regarding jailbreaking.

Will jailbreaking void my warranty? According to Apple, it “can void the warranty”. However, this is almost impossible in practice. Jailbreaking only modifies the software, not the hardware. Because of this, jailbreaks are completely reversable and a reversed jailbreak is undetectable.

What are the benefits of jailbreaking/unlocking? Mainly, you will save money. Jailbreaking allows you to get thousands of apps for free because you don’t have to go through the iTunes App Store (where apps are often overpriced). You can also download wallpapers, ringtones, etc. Unlocking allows you to use your device with the network or carrier that offers the best price and service, not just the ones that Apple limits you to.

Do I need technical or programming knowledge to jailbreak/unlock my device? Not at all. There are many software options that will unlock and/or jailbreak your iPad or iPhone for you within a few minutes.

Thanks for the advice. If I just want free apps, I should only jailbreak and not unlock right? I want to stay on my Verizon plan.
